I am a Reception Teacher & have been teaching for over 30 years. I love art, outdoor learning, being in nature & of course being with the children. I have a slight problem as I am a hoarder of books & love nothing more than sharing stories with our children. I am enjoying rejuvenating my creativity in making attractive and engaging continuous provision activities. I hope you enjoy joining me on my journey as I share what we are learning and how I am engaging little minds and their curiosity.

Starry Night subitising

As part of our artist study on Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night painting this week I have created a subitising game as part of our Continuous provision for maths. There are 4 base boards with numbered stars, one in the correct order the rest in random order. There are then 4 sets of circle cards using star circles inspired by Vincent’s stars in his painting. There are 4 different subitising arrangements to add challenge. Alternatively you could use the circle star cards as the base boards and cut the star number cards to match. You could even cut all the cards and use as a snap matching game. PS apologies for the poor quality photo of the star cards they are clear and sharp in the PDF. The yellow circles with blue dots are stars in the style of van Gogh’s swirly stars.

4 activity boards to laminate & use with loose parts to explore the swirls and marks inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s famous Starry Night picture. I used these as a continuous provision activity to explore key elements of his work in readiness to create our own paintings in his style.

A set of black on white posters highlighting the different marks and lines that can be created to aid drawing skills. Display in your mark making / art area to prompt the children to make marks to create texture and detail to their drawings.

Design a space model

A prompt and design sheets to use when preparing to make space vehicles using recycling materials. The prompt uses picture cues to help children to choose the materials they need to make their model to go into space whether that’s a space rocket, shuttle, space ship or a moon/mars buggy to explore with. I have been blown away by the things my Reception class have made independently during CP. Their descriptions of what their craft was called and what it would help them to see and do in Space was a fitting activity to share what they had learned about Space.

Art studio labels

Here are my art labels which I have used in our ‘art studio’ in my Reception classroom. The children are able to freely access all these resources which are stored on open shelves in various containers. I have a label on the container and another on the shelf where they need to replace it at tidy time . It has been working well - honestly!
